Amanda And Scott’s Wedding

Sea Temple Resort and Spa, Palm Cove

21st May 2011

Amanda and Scott met in October 2008 at a night club on the Gold Coast who would have thought on that night that a fewyears later here they would be on a Far North Queensland beach at Palm Cove ona beautiful sunny day surrounded by friends and family to celebrate their wedding.

Amanda was on the Gold Coast for a work conference and Scott was on a bucks weekend away. We  met briefly and exchanged numbers and went on a date the following week in Canberra with Scott travelling down from Sydney.

Amanda Getting Ready

They were both very committed to the relationship right from the start.

Amanda was living in Canberra and Scott was living in Sydney. So  Scott would fly to Canberra every Wednesday-Friday and then I would travel to Sydney for the weekends to see each other. After 18 months of doing this we decided that I would make the move to Sydney.

The proposal came during a Picnic lunch at the Sea Temple Palm Cove and this lead them to choose the venue for their reception.

The wedding was beautiful taking place on the Beach with Balinese flags that they purchased on arriving in Cairns during the week.

After our Photo session on the beach we headed down the foreshore of Palm Cove to get as many variations on locations as possible, including the pier.

The reception was beautifully laid out in the outdoor undercover dining area of The Sea Temple.

The cake was beautiful and had been expertly crafted by Passion for Cakes and made the usual “Cake Cutting Image” a lot of fun.

The Bridal Waltz lead into the festivities moving up a notch….

One of the things that differentiates me as a photographer is my wide scope of skill and experience within the field and this is something my clients often comment on when booking me to photograph their wedding.

I am not simply a wedding photographer but someone who has worked with some of the most famous people on the planet often under immense pressure and short time frames to get ” That Shot”.

It is this experience that gives me the neccesary skills to ensure I can create the most beautiful and unique images of your wedding day under virtually any circumstances.

With the release of  legendary Australian singer Jimmy Barnes’ new album in 2010 and the complete overhaul of his website I had the oppurtunity to photograph the “working class man”.

Young photographers and students often ask me how I arrange such shoots or why is it that I am approached and the simplest answer is realtionships, along with the clients knowledge the job will be completed to an exceptionally high standard.

I first photographed Jimmy Barnes in Sydney for Mushroom Records in 1995, this was at an album launch at the legendary Marble Bar located in The Sydney Hilton.

Jimmy Barnes live @ The Marble Bar 1995

This is a long time ago and have photographed and interviewed him on numerous occasions since.

Sometimes what a client wants and what the photographer wants can be a little different, when photographing celebrities and other prominent individuals I like to shoot to the brief I am given but I also like to get that one iconic image of the person for my own archive. This is that image.

Studio portrait of Jimmy barnes by Nathan David Kelly, 2011

The image that Jimmy and his wife Jane especially liked was a rare one of him really smiling, when this pic was taken there were people shouting from a balcony above at the hotel…. Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy even I was laughing.

When you go and visit Jimmy’s website (http://www.jimmybarnes.com/) it is this smiling portrait of Jimmy that asks you to sign up to his newsletter.

The only regret that I have from this shoot is that just after I had taken down all the lights and backdrop one of Australia’s greatest guitarists who I have always wanted to photograph Charlie Owen walked in the room, I could have kicked myself.

The wedding of Nicole Flynn and Laurence Stuart

As Nicole and Stuart walked back down the aisle now as husband and wife they were showered with red rose petals.

22nd of May 2010.

Paradise Palms Resort and Country Club

Nicole and Laurence met with friends, around the pool watching the NRL finals and Stuart proposed to Nicole on the balcony of our room at the Mantra Hotel Mooloolaba whilst eating fresh seafood and watching the sunset.

Their wedding was held at Paradise Palms just north of Cairns and Nicole’s mother was the marriage celebrant.

The wedding dress was a  Justin Alexander Gown, accesorised with diamante and crystal earrings by Kezzani. With the groom and groomsmen suits from Spurling Formalwear.

The theme for the wedding was B lack and White  semi- formal and was achived by cordinating bridesmaid and groomsmen attire and the Ceremony and Reception at Paradise Palms with Black and white theme to decorate the room. A special touch was a single white rose immmersed in water in a vase with tealight candles as table centrepieces.

The Bomboniere were Decorated Noodleboxes filled with the bride and grooms favourite lollies from when they were young .

The cake was a three tier square shaped cake from Cakes by Design. it was decorated with white icing with a black ribbon at the base of each layer to fit the black and white theme. A layer each of fruit cake, white chocolate mud cake and chocolate mudcake. A swarovski crystal brooch sitting in the middle of a bow at the base of the top layer, with the ribbon flowing down the tiers.

The photographs were taken on location at Paradise Palms and then on to the sunset on the beach at Palm Cove just a short drive away.

Entertainment was provided by Spectrum Sounds so the couple could dance the night away with friends and Family.

Nicole’s advice to would be brides is to shop around and do some research on the internet for ideas it really helps.

Patrick and Rebecca had always known of each other and but really hit it off at a combined birthday party of friends and have been best friends ever since…

Patrick proposed to Rebecca on her birthday after having Darryn from DK Jewellery ( www.designerjewellersydney.com.au) design the engagement ring in secret.

The theme of their wedding was to be laid back and colourful and this was achieved by the floral bouquet of gerbera’s grown by Rebecca’s close friends, that were used on the cake the table display and in the chapel to great effect.

The wedding was held in Yunguburra a small town on the atherton tablelands a 1 hour drive from Cairns where there is a small wedding chapel (www.weddingchapelandmore.com) and the reception was held at Nick’s Restaurant (www.nicksrestaurant.com.au) .

Rebecca’s dress took a bit of arranging, she initially went to see Elma at Bridal Elegance ( www.bridaleleganceandextras.com.au)  and tried on a lot of dresses but nothing felt right. She showed Rebecca a photograph of a dress she had ordered and Rebecca fell in love with it from that picture alone….to have it in time for the wedding Rebecca had to order it without ever having tried it on …this was a little scary for the bride but well worth it in the end as it was the perfect dress  …. made by Impressions Bridal ( www.impressionsbridal.com)

The three little flower girls who are part of the bridal party are Patrick’s nieces they were so beautiful and they will keep us smiling forever.

The church was full of friends and family and Rebecca’s father walked her down the aisle to Patrick who was nervously waiting…

Rebecca’s advice for Brides ….

“Don’t stress. Your day is going to be beautiful no matter what. Take the time to enjoy planning your wedding not making it a chore. There are plenty of people willing to help you along the way so there is no need for a bridezilla to appear. And remember in the end it is your day. If you have forgotten a table decoration, stuffed your speech up or even dropped cake on your dress, laugh it off and have fun!!! “

Recently Nathan took some time out of his busy schedule to speak with Tanya Bird, the editor of City Life magazine in Cairns about The Metropolitan Museum in New York’s recent acquisition of  four of his photographs.

The photographs the museum acquired were taken at The Laura Dance Festival in 2007 and were late exhibited as part of Nathan’s “Cairns To The Cape” exhibition which was held at The Cairns Regional Gallery, the exhibition prints measure 1.2m x 3 metres.

Nathan also speaks about his early career as a photographer working with people like Nick Cave, U2 and BB King and the inclusion of his work into other prominent collections such as The National Portrait Gallery (Australia) and The National Library.

Nathan’s interview with City Life magazine

Last week saw the start of the wedding season for us here at Cairns Wedding Photography with our head photographer Nathan David Kelly photographing Mitch and Hayley’s beautiful day.

It was an early start to the day with the ceremony beginning at 1pm.

Nathan Met Hayley at her room at the Cairns Colonial Club to do  all the pre-wedding bridal party photographs, Hayley looked beautiful.

From the Colonial Club the bridal party headed to The Kingdom Hall at Edmonton for the ceremony.

After the more formal part of the ceremony a group shot and family shots were taken at The Kingdom Hall

The bridal party set of for various locations around Cairns which included Palm Cove and The Cairns Colonial Club which was where they had their reception.

Even though it was a grey and at times rainy day Mitch and Hayley did not let this spoil it for them. The images came out beautifully, often it is the trying circumstances that really allows a photographer to show off their talent and get the shots needed no matter what the situation is in terms of the weather.

Congratulations to Mitch and Hayley and we wish you all the best for your married life together.

The National Library of Australia in December 2009 acquired another of Nathan’s images. This image is a portrait of legendary Torres Strait Islander singer and songwriter and two time ARIA Award winner Seaman Dan. Taken at The Tanks Arts Centre on the occasion of Seaman Dan’s last performance.
